Includes a Live In-Person Event on 11/13/2025 at 10:00 AM (EST)

A 4-Hour Training with Samson Teklemariam, LPC, CPTM

10am-3:30pm

130 Pembroke Road, Suite 150, Concord, NH 03301

Presentation: Underserved and marginalized communities—such as individuals with criminal justice involvement, those experiencing housing insecurity, and people living with financial hardship—face significantly higher rates of trauma exposure and substance use disorders (SUDs). The 2023 National Survey on Drug Use and Health showed that amongst the 6.8 million in the U.S. with both a Substance-related and severe mental health condition, only 25.4% received integrated treatment for both conditions—despite the fact that many of these individuals report histories of trauma and come from economically or socially marginalized backgrounds where the need for integrated care is especially critical. This training explores the clinical and contextual realities of co-occurring trauma-related disorders and SUDs, with an emphasis on practical tools for engaging and supporting special populations. Participants will examine key trauma-SUD intersections, review trauma-specific approaches that are adaptable across diverse treatment settings and learn how to strengthen co-occurring capable practices. The session will also address how stigma can interfere with engagement and recovery and provide strategies for reducing its impact.

As a result of this training, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the relationship between trauma-related and substance use, particularly among underserved and high-risk populations;
  2. Apply trauma-specific, evidence-based strategies that support co-occurring capable care; and
  3. Recognize how stigma may disrupt engagement and recovery, and implement practical methods to address the stigma of co-occurring conditions.
