Presentation: This training will familiarize participants with SBIRT along with providing practice in implementing it utilizing case-based learning. An overview of the ASAM criteria will allow participants to have a better understanding of levels of care for substance use disorders. With this knowledge, participants will feel empowered in providing evidence-based care to people with substance use disorders.
As a result of this training, participants will be able to:
- Understand the principles of SBIRT and how to utilize it in clinical settings;
- Identify two different screening tools that can be utilized in SBIRT;
- Identify the six dimensions of the ASAM criteria and how this can be utilized in guiding care; and
- Describe the stages of change model and identify appropriate clinical interventions for each stage to enhance client engagement and treatment outcomes.

Darin Szczotka, LMSW, is a clinical social worker with over eight years of experience specializing in mental health and substance use disorders. He earned both his Bachelor of Social Work and Master of Social Work degrees from Eastern Michigan University. Darin joined the Addiction Consult Team at Michigan Medicine in December 2022, where he provides assessment, consultation, and support to patients navigating complex challenges with addiction and co-occurring disorders. In addition to his hospital-based work, Darin maintains a private practice where he supports individuals living with mental health concerns and substance use issues. Known for his enthusiasm, compassion, and patient-centered approach, Darin is committed to reducing stigma, advancing harm reduction practices, and helping individuals achieve their goals in recovery and wellness.
