A 3-Hour Training with Dr. Michele Waldron

Virtual via Zoom | 12:00pm-3:30pm

Presentation: Substance Use Disorders are a complex constellation of symptoms that encompass the biological, social, psychological, and spiritual health of individuals. A client’s sexuality is often closely linked to or even enmeshed with their substance use behavior, but is often left out of substance use programming. Evidence suggests that clients are more successful in maintaining sobriety when they are able to incorporate their sexuality into their recovery plan. The topic of Sexual Health casts a wide net and it can be difficult to know what topics to prioritize in treatment. Clients will often ask questions about what is normal and imply that sexual behavior should be a certain way, though are often misguided. We will explore common sex education topics and introduce an established curriculum for substance use programming.

As a result of this training, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe sexuality issues often seen and neglected in substance use treatment;
  2. Identify 5 motivations for sex and substance use-linked behavior;
  3. Explain how to approach questions about “what is normal” when it comes to sexual behavior; and
  4. Discuss 2 ways sexual health can be included in treatment planning and assessment.
