Exploring the Intersection of Human Trafficking, Substance Misuse, and Addiction - February 12, 2026

Presentation: Human trafficking, substance misuse, and addiction are deeply interconnected issues that often reinforce each other in complex and devastating ways. These interconnecting issues have implications for providers working in various professions, such as social work, counseling, substance misuse, public health, and criminal justice. This training will explore the multifaceted relationship between these challenges, examining how substance use can be both a vulnerability factor for exploitation and a tool of control used by traffickers. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the current empirical literature regarding how trauma, addiction, and victimization intersect.

As a result of this training, participants will be able to:

1. Identify ways in which substance misuse is used as a mechanism to victimize individuals at risk for or engaged in human trafficking;
2. Recognize the challenges that increase the risk of both trafficking and substance use disorder; and
3. Understand current trends and research regarding human trafficking, addiction, and substance misuse.
