A 6-Hour Training with Samson Teklemariam, LPC, CPTM
Virtual via Zoom | 8:30am-4:00pm
Presentation: Co-Occurring Disorders such as attention-deficient hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and substance use disorder (SUD) do not discriminate, however, children who are African American are diagnosed with ADHD at only two-thirds the rate of white children despite displaying equal or higher presenting symptoms (Shi, et al., 2021). The experience of assessment, diagnosis and treatment of ADHD is often complicated and frustrating for the patient in need, especially in the context of addiction treatment settings. Those providing treatment for co-occurring ADHD and SUD rarely have adequate training that supports the patient’s primary needs and includes cultural responsiveness. In this training, participants will be able to expand comprehensive assessment strategies, conceptualize the journey of diagnosis, assessment, and treatment for people from marginalized communities with ADHD and SUD, and tailor addiction treatment to include evidence-based interventions to support ADHD treatment.
As a result of this training, participants will be able to:
- Verbalize common co-occurrences of ADHD and SUD;
- Conduct a cultural formulation interview; and
- Apply culturally responsive assessment and treatment strategies for individuals with ADHD and SUD.
