A 6-Hour Training with Samson Teklemariam, LPC, CPTM

Virtual via Zoom | 8:30am-4:00pm

Presentation: The evolution of trauma-informed care in addiction treatment settings has equipped addiction professionals with a baseline understanding that many of those with substance use disorders (SUDs) also have experience with trauma-related conditions. However, training beyond that foundational understanding of “trauma-aware” or “trauma-informed” varies greatly from program to program, and professional to professional. According to the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM), co-occurring-capable (COC) programs are addiction treatment programs that can also treat patients with SUDs and mental health disorders. However, after continued expansion for affordable healthcare, many communities are finally able to access care for the first time, and the need is greater than ever for co-occurring capable, co-occurring enhanced and complexity capable addiction treatment. Trauma-related disorders are one of the most prevalent co-occurring conditions for those receiving SUD treatment. In this training, participants will acquire a greater understanding of the relationship between SUDs and trauma, learn how to apply trauma-specific treatment principles to SUD treatment programming, and be able to apply trauma-specific treatment interventions that are accessible for any addiction treatment professional.

As a result of this training, participants will be able to:

  1. Screen for trauma-related conditions that co-occur frequently with substance use disorders;
  2. Provide co-occurring capable treatment services, such as trauma-specific evidence-based treatment interventions; and
  3. Describe how to address the negative stigma for those with trauma-related and substance use disorders.
