A 6-Hour Training with Samson Teklemariam, LPC, CPTM

Virtual via Zoom | 8:30am-4:00pm

Presentation: According to a 2011 article in the Psychiatric Times, 33 – 45% of people with anxiety disorders also have a substance use disorder during a 12-month period. Addiction professionals, for more than a decade, have had valid evidence of co-occurring conditions but often report insufficient training on how to individualize treatment for SUDs that co-occur with depressive and anxiety-related disorders. According to the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM), co-occurring-capable (COC) programs are addiction treatment programs that can also treat patients with SUDs and mental health disorders. However, after continued expansion for affordable healthcare, many communities are finally able to access care for the first time, and the need is greater than ever for co-occurring capable, co-occurring enhanced and complexity capable addiction treatment. In this training, participants will be able to more effectively screen for depressive and anxiety-related disorders that present most often in addiction treatment settings and acquire evidence-based interventions for treating these co-occurring conditions.

As a result of this training, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the most prevalent depressive and anxiety-related disorders that co-occur with SUDs, and provide effective screening, assessment, or referral;
  2. Apply organizational system changes or updates that align closer to a co-occurring capable or co-occurring enhanced addiction treatment program; and
  3. Provide brief evidence-based interventions that support treatment for co-occurring depressive, anxiety-related and substance use disorders.
