Presentation: Attendees will have an increased understanding of how brain injury, SUD, and overdoses are interrelated with examples of best practice treatment & counseling, including the use of harm reduction strategies. Will learn brain injury basics and how this can impact the effectiveness of SUD treatment, as well as compensatory strategies for individuals receiving treatment to have more favorable outcomes. We will discuss initiatives at the Brain Injury Association of NH, including work through various grants to meet the needs of this growing population.
As a result of this training, participants will be able to:
- List 3 strategies to more effectively engage this population in substance use treatment;
- Identify 5 effects of overdose on brain function particularly related to opioid use; and
- List 3 resources available to providers & clinicians for working with this population.

Krystal Chase, LICSW, CBIS is the Director of Programs and Services at the Brain Injury Association of New Hampshire in Concord, NH. She has years of experience as a social worker helping adults with mental health and/or co-occurring substance use disorders, as well as with children with developmental disabilities including autistic spectrum disorders. She has worked in both inpatient and outpatient settings including in-home care and crisis stabilization. She is skilled in group facilitation of psychoeducational, psychotherapeutic and expressive therapy groups. Krystal received her Master of social Work from the University of New Hampshire and is licensed as an Independent Clinical Social Worker and a Certified Brain Injury Specialists.
