Presentation: In 2025, New Hampshire’s total gaming market generated $403.2 million from charitable gaming and casinos and $103.6 million from sports betting, achieving a record annual gross revenue and ranking NH third in the country in per capita state revenue from sports betting. Despite the gaming industry's exponential financial success, New Hampshire continues to lack comprehensive prevention, treatment, and recovery resources to address gambling-related problems. This comprehensive training is intended for mental health or addiction professionals who work with clients experiencing gambling challenges or their support systems. Whether you are well versed in process addictions or curious about how gambling becomes a problem, this training is for you.
As a result of this training, participants will be able to:
- Understand the landscape of gambling access in NH, demographic factors, and the impact on the ecological system;
- Describe the basics of epidemiology, neurobiology, and diagnostic criteria for gambling disorder including risk factors;
- Recognize the signs and symptoms of gambling-related harms by applying DSM-V criteria, validated screening tools, and understanding the comorbidity of mental health conditions; and
- Differentiate approaches to prevention, evidence-based treatment, harm reduction, and recovery interventions for gambling behavior.

Phoebe Axtman, MLADC, LICSW has owned a therapy practice in New Hampshire since 2022. She has diverse expertise in clinical practice, community engagement, and social justice advocacy. As a dual-licensed professional with experience in mental health and substance use treatment, Phoebe is passionate about bridging the gap between two historically separate specialties that share significant overlap in practice. As a specialist in Gambling Addiction Treatment, Phoebe is dedicated to sharing her knowledge and expertise on a growing issue. She is a board member of the NH Alcohol & Drug Abuse Counselors Association, the NH Harm Reduction Coalition, and vice board president of the NH Council on Problem Gambling. For the last three years Phoebe has also served as a harm reduction advocate on a state task force for the Governor's Commission on Alcohol and Other Drugs, and most recently transitioned to s seat on the Gambling Task Force.
